Police and Bank Collaborate to Prevent Numerous Scams During the Year-End Season, Successfully Protecting the Purses of Three Individuals

2024.02.16

During the year-end period, fraud cases are frequent, and the Huwei Police Station, of Huwei Precinct, has been actively promoting the police-bank interception mechanism. Recently, at the King’s Town Bank on Gong’an Road in Huwei Township and the post office on Linsen Road, three men attempted to remit NT$1 million, NT$500,000, and NT$450,000 respectively. Through the thorough questioning while exercising care for customers, bank staff discovered discrepancies between the remittance amounts and recipients, indicating possible fraud, and promptly reported the incident to the officers at the Huwei Police Station for further investigation. Persuaded by the police, the three men decided against making the remittance, and, upon discovering that they were at risk of fraud, expressed their sincere gratitude to the police officers and bank staff.

In order to effectively combat fraud, the Huwei Police Station has been endorsing a police-bank interception mechanism, accomplished by enhancing communication with financial institutions and demonstrating care for bank employees, so as to increase the success rate of intercepting fraud. In all three instances, it was the bank employees who noticed the discrepancies and swiftly alerted the police, successfully preventing fraud and safeguarding the public’s finances.

Furthermore, the Huwei Police Station would like to express its sincere gratitude for the assistance provided by the staff of various financial institutions in combating fraud on the front lines. Mr. Cheng Shun-Yuan, Chief of Huwei Police Station, also recently visited King’s Town Bank and the post office to express his recognition of the staff and present them with rewards. During his visit, he also discussed the various fraudulent methods that have become increasingly common, including fake investments, fraudulent romantic relationships, and scams targeting the elderly through impersonation of relatives and friends, with the aim of enhancing the employees’ awareness of the diverse range of fraudulent techniques, allowing them to identify scams fast and protect the public purse.

The Huwei Precinct emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant to avoid falling into fraud traps. When coming across investment advertisements or information from unfamiliar online contacts, it is important to recognize that any promises of “guaranteed profits” or “no risks” are fraudulent. By avoiding the wrong first step, one can prevent subsequent financial losses. In detail, it is crucial to keep in mind three don’ts: don’t trust information from unknown sources, don’t join suspicious investment groups, and don’t use questionable profit-guaranteeing apps and investment platform websites. Adhering to these guidelines can effectively protect you from falling victim to scams.
